Lucky Enough

An old friend of mine is lucky enough to live at the confluence of two small lakes. I hope I’m using that word right — what I mean to say is that if you look out the windows of his home toward the east you see one lake; and if you look toward the north you see a different one. Can you picture it? On the little spit of land that juts into the space between the two lakes, right next to where families of ducks and swans cross all the day long in a patient parade of parenting, sits a small cabin. And in the front window of that cabin rests a sign:

“If you’re lucky enough to live on the water, you’re lucky enough.”

I don’t live near the water. But it was hard to stop thinking about that message once I had seen it. And so yesterday, as I walked, I began to think of all the lucky signs I might make:

If you’re lucky enough to be able to take long walks every weekend, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to have a devoted canine friend, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to know where your kids are, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to feel the sun on your face, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to live near a library, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to sleep in a warm, dry bed, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to have time to pull weeds, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to have someone to share your food with, you’re lucky enough.

And if you’re lucky enough to have food to share, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to have chickens, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to have shoes that don’t hurt, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to find a fresh pot of coffee in the mornings, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to know someone who’ll trade shoulder rubs, you’re lucky enough.

If you’re lucky enough to have a warm hat and gloves, you’re lucky enough.

And finally, and most important: If you’re lucky enough to have your health, you’re lucky enough.
